The Pool Party - Part I

The cicadas were singing to an almost hypnotic tune. The sun was blazing down on Littlehaven as a heat-wave swept across the little suburban town.

 

Folks everywhere were avoiding the afternoon sun, searching for the shade to cool down.

 

That is, except for Joleen and her friends!

 

Shane disappeared under waves as he launched into the pool. Water sprayed in all directions.

 

“Watch it!” Joleen protested.

 

A moment later, Shane rose out and did his classic hair-swoosh move. Joleen laughed, comfortable on her deck chair, dry, and getting a rather nice tan. “What’re you tryin’ to do, hun? Re-enact Deep Impact?”

 

Shane didn’t seem to mind, swimming gracefully toward her. “Well, it’s a pool - and pools are for jumping into, ‘hun’.”

 

“Give me a comfortable chair and the sun any day,” Joleen sighed, and closed her eyes, taking in more rays. A moment later she peered around. “I wonder where everyone else is...?”

 

“Who else did you ask?” Shane paddled into the center of the pool.

 

“Oh, well, Chloe... Mike... Fleur... Barb... the usuals.” Joleen sipped at her drink. “I’m sure I told them all about it.”

 

Shane swam on his back, spitting out a fountain of water. “Maybe they all decided to go somewhere else...”

 

Joleen scowled at him. “Don’t be silly. Where else would anyone go?”

 

Shane held his tongue. It hadn’t been a surprise to him that Joleen hadn’t mentioned Bella in her list. Ever since the two ladies found out they were both getting pools installed in their homes - at the same time - there was a little bit of friendly rivalry between them.

 

Just then, Eugine came running out of the house in swimming shorts and made for a huge jump, “Geronimoooooo!”

 

He landed squarely in the center of the pool, sending water meters high and even reaching Joleen in her ‘safe’ distance.

 

“Dude!” Shane spluttered, bobbing up and down with the waves, “watch where you’re diving, man!”

 

Eugine caught his breath. “Sorry, Shane,” he blushed, “I can’t really see much without my glasses on.”

 

Joleen sighed and tried to look relaxed in the sun. Surely... surely her friends would be over soon...?
